Santa Fe, NM

Day #68
Tripometer: 8345 miles

Mom and I spent the day in Santa Fe and had a wonderful time. We took a tour of the govenor's palace (where we learned the New Mexico is the only state that has "USA" on it's license plates so people don't get confused), went to the Museum of Fine Arts, checked out the Native American art being sold in the plaza, and checked out a couple of old churches. The most spectacular to me was Loretto's Chapel. As the story goes the Sisters of Loretto spent months looking for someone to build a way for them to get to the second level of the chapel. After many people tried and failed one man built a spiral staircase. However he disappeared without being thanked or getting paid. The most remarkable thing is that there is no visible source of support. The staircase makes two complete circles and was originally build without a handrail. If you take a step out of the religiousness of the environment you can really enjoy both the chapel and the staircase as works of art.
